How 出 is built

Ideographic (compound meaning) character. A sprout 屮 growing out of a container 凵.

Radical: 凵 (container), shared by 8 characters on this site.

How to remember 出

The top part 屮 is a sprout and the bottom part 凵 is an open container. Picture a sprout pushing up and out of a box, and you have 出 (chū), to go out or come out.

出 is used for leaving or appearing, as in 出去 (chūqù) and 出现 (chūxiàn), and after another verb to show an outward direction or a result, as in 找出 (zhǎochū) to find. It is also a classifier for plays and operas. Example: 我们明天早上出发。(Wǒmen míngtiān zǎoshang chūfā.) We set off tomorrow morning.

Common mistake: Learners often write 出 as two 山 stacked on top of each other, but the middle vertical stroke runs through the whole character in one line. Also keep the first tone, chū, and do not confuse it with 初 (chū, beginning), which sounds the same.
