How to remember 及
及 contains 又 (yòu), a hand. Picture a hand stretching out from behind to grab someone, so the hand finally reaches its target, which is the idea of 'to reach' or 'in time'.
及 rarely stands alone in speech. It appears in words like 及时 (jíshí, timely), 来得及 (láidejí, can make it in time) and 来不及 (láibují, too late), and in formal writing 以及 (yǐjí) means 'and, as well as'. Example: 快走,还来得及。(Kuài zǒu, hái láidejí.) Go quickly, there is still time.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 及 (jí) with 级 (jí, level, grade), which has the silk radical 纟 on the left. Write 及格 (jígé) for passing a test, but 年级 (niánjí) for a school grade.

In 来不及 (láibují) and 来得及 (láidejí), the middle syllable is an infix that is read lightly in the neutral tone. Saying 不 with a full fourth tone here sounds unnatural in normal speech.
