How 觉 is built

Phono-semantic (sound + meaning) character. See.

⺍component+mìcover+jiànto see

见 gives the meaning and ⺍ hints at the sound.

Radical: 见 (to see), shared by 14 characters on this site.

How to remember 觉

The bottom part is 见 (jiàn, to see), the meaning part, under a cover 冖 with ⺍ on top as the sound hint. When you wake up, you open your eyes and see again, so 觉 is about becoming aware.

Read it jué for feeling and awareness, as in 觉得 (juéde) and 感觉 (gǎnjué). Read it jiào only for sleep, mainly in 睡觉 (shuìjiào). Example: 我觉得很累,想睡觉。(Wǒ juéde hěn lèi, xiǎng shuìjiào.) I feel tired and want to sleep.

Common mistake: Learners often say shuìjué for 睡觉. The correct reading is shuìjiào, and jué is used in words about feeling. Also do not confuse 觉 with 党 (dǎng, party), which has 儿 at the bottom instead of 见.
