How to use 将
As an adverb, 将 (jiāng) marks a future action and sounds more formal than 会 (huì) or 要 (yào). It is common in news, notices and writing. As a preposition it works like 把 (bǎ) to bring the object before the verb: 会议将在明天举行。(Huìyì jiāng zài míngtiān jǔxíng.) The meeting will be held tomorrow.
Picture a general, 将军 (jiāngjūn), planning what his army will do next. The same character that names the leader also points to the future, so 将 (jiāng) means "will" or "about to."
Common mistake: Learners often read every 将 as jiāng, but in "general" it is jiàng in fourth tone, as in 大将 (dàjiàng). Note that 将军 is usually read jiāngjūn, which adds to the confusion, so check each word.
