Meaning of 届
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- to arrive at (place or time)
- period
- to become due
- classifier for events, meetings, elections, sporting fixtures, years (of graduation)
How to use 届
届 is mostly used as a classifier for things that happen in rounds, such as meetings, elections, sports games, and graduating classes. It often comes after 第 to give an ordinal number. Example: 第三十届奥运会 (dì sānshí jiè Àoyùnhuì) the 30th Olympic Games.
届 is built from 尸, which looks like a roof or a body lying down, over 由. Picture people gathering under one roof again and again, one session after another, and you have the classifier for recurring events.
Common mistake: Learners often use 次 (cì) where 届 is needed. 次 counts any occurrence, but 届 is for scheduled, numbered sessions or graduating classes, so say 第十届会议, not 第十次会议, when you mean the official tenth session. Also do not confuse 届 with 屈 (qū, to bend), which has 出 under 尸 instead of 由.
