工商 is a formal word used in business, government and news, often before another noun, as in 工商业 (industry and commerce) or 工商管理 (business administration). Example: 他在大学学工商管理。(Tā zài dàxué xué gōngshāng guǎnlǐ.) He studies business administration at university.
工 (gōng) is the same 工 as in 工人 (gōngrén), worker, so think of factories and industry. 商 (shāng) is the 商 in 商店 (shāngdiàn), store, so think of trade. Put making and selling together and you get 工商, industry and commerce.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes use 工商 to mean a single shop or a job, but it refers to the whole sector of industry and commerce. For a store say 商店 (shāngdiàn), and for a job say 工作 (gōngzuò). Also keep both syllables in the first tone, gōngshāng, and do not drop 商 to the third tone.
