- open (for business)
How to use 开业
开业 is used when a shop, restaurant, clinic or company starts operating for the first time, and it often appears on banners and in news. It works as a verb and can't take a direct object. Example: 这家餐厅下个月开业。(Zhè jiā cāntīng xià ge yuè kāiyè.) This restaurant opens next month.
开 (kāi) means to open, and 业 (yè) means business or trade, as in 商业 (shāngyè, commerce). Put them together and you literally "open a business".
Common mistake: Learners often use 开业 for a shop opening each morning, but that is 开门 (kāimén). 开业 means the first opening of a new business. Also don't say 开业一家店. Say 一家店开业 or use 开 instead: 开了一家店.
