Meaning of 患者
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- patient; sufferer
How to use 患者
患者 is a formal word used in hospitals, news reports, and medical writing, often with a disease name in front. In everyday speech people usually say 病人 (bìngrén). Example: 这位糖尿病患者需要每天检查血糖。(Zhè wèi tángniàobìng huànzhě xūyào měitiān jiǎnchá xuètáng.) This diabetes patient needs to check his blood sugar every day.
患 (huàn) shows 串 (a string of things) over 心 (heart), so picture worries piled on the heart, meaning illness or trouble. Add 者 (zhě), "a person who", and 患者 is the person who suffers, a patient.
Common mistake: Learners often write 患 with 中 on top instead of 串, which has two stacked 口 shapes joined by one vertical stroke. Also, do not confuse 患者 (huànzhě) with 或者 (huòzhě), "or". They sound similar but mean completely different things.
