How to use 报到
报到 is used when you formally check in at a new school, job, hospital, or event. It is often paired with a place using 去 or 来, or with 向 for the person you report to. Example: 新生明天去学校报到。(Xīnshēng míngtiān qù xuéxiào bàodào.) New students report to school tomorrow.
报 (bào) means to report, and 到 (dào) means to arrive. When you arrive somewhere official, you report that you are here: 报到.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 报到 (bàodào, to check in) with 报道 (bàodào, a news report). They sound identical, but 报道 uses 道 and is about journalism, not arriving. Also, 报到 takes no direct object, so say 去公司报到, not 报到公司.
