How to use 政权
政权 is a formal word used in news, history and political writing to talk about who holds state power, or about a particular government as a ruling system. It often appears with verbs like 建立 (jiànlì, establish), 夺取 (duóqǔ, seize) and 推翻 (tuīfān, overthrow). Example: 这个政权只维持了十年。(Zhège zhèngquán zhǐ wéichí le shí nián.) This regime lasted only ten years.
政 (zhèng) means politics or governing, as in 政治 (zhèngzhì), and 权 (quán) means power, as in 权力 (quánlì). Put them together and you get the power to govern: a regime or political power.
Common mistake: Learners often use 政权 when they just mean the government that runs daily affairs. For that, use 政府 (zhèngfǔ). 政权 stresses ruling power or the regime as a whole. Also do not confuse 权力 (quánlì, power) with 权利 (quánlì, a right). They sound the same but are written differently.
