How to use 汇率
汇率 is the normal word for a currency exchange rate in news, banks and travel talk. It often appears with 人民币 (rénmínbì) or 美元 (měiyuán). Example: 今天的汇率是多少？(Jīntiān de huìlǜ shì duōshao?) What is today's exchange rate?
汇 (huì) means to gather or send money, as in 外汇 (wàihuì) foreign exchange, and 率 (lǜ) means a rate, as in 效率 (xiàolǜ) efficiency. Put them together and you get the rate at which money is exchanged.
Common mistake: 率 has two readings. Here it is lǜ, not shuài as in 率先 (shuàixiān) or 率领 (shuàilǐng). Also note that lǜ uses ü, so do not pronounce it like lù.
