How to use 留学
留学 is a verb phrase, and the country usually comes after 去 or 在, as in 去美国留学. It also forms common nouns like 留学生 (liúxuéshēng), an international student. Example: 她明年想去日本留学。(Tā míngnián xiǎng qù Rìběn liúxué.) She wants to go study in Japan next year.
留 (liú) means to stay or remain, and 学 (xué) means to study. To study abroad is to stay in another country in order to study.
Common mistake: Learners often say 留学日本 on the model of English word order. The more natural pattern is 去日本留学 or 在日本留学. Also, 留 is second tone (liú), so do not confuse it with 六 (liù), six.
