How to use 祝福
祝福 works as a verb (to bless, to wish someone well) and as a noun (blessings, good wishes). It is common at weddings, birthdays, holidays and farewells, and in text messages. Example: 我们祝福你们新婚快乐。(Wǒmen zhùfú nǐmen xīnhūn kuàilè.) We wish you a happy marriage.
祝 (zhù) means to wish someone well, and 福 (fú) is good fortune, the character you see upside down on doors at Spring Festival. Put them together and you are sending good fortune to someone: a blessing.
Common mistake: Learners often mix up 祝福 with 祝贺 (zhùhè). 祝贺 congratulates someone on something already achieved, like passing an exam. 祝福 expresses hopes for the future. Also watch the tones: both syllables are not the same. 祝 is fourth tone and 福 is second tone, zhùfú.
