How to use 结实
结实 (jiēshi) describes objects that are well made and hard to break, and also people with a strong, healthy build. It often follows 很 or 挺. Example: 这个箱子很结实。(Zhège xiāngzi hěn jiēshi.) This box is very sturdy.
结 (jié) means to tie a knot, and 实 (shí) means solid or real. Something tied tight and solid all the way through is 结实 (jiēshi), sturdy and strong.
Common mistake: Learners often read 结 as jié here, but in the adjective it is first tone jiē, and 实 is usually a light neutral tone shi. Also, 结实 is not the same as 坚强 (jiānqiáng): 结实 is physical sturdiness, while 坚强 means mentally strong.
