How to use 脚
脚 means the foot of a person, and it also names the base or bottom part of things, as in 山脚 (shānjiǎo) the foot of a mountain. It can also count kicks, as in 踢了一脚 (tī le yì jiǎo) gave a kick. Example: 我的脚很疼。(Wǒ de jiǎo hěn téng.) My foot hurts a lot.
脚 (jiǎo) has the flesh/body part side 月 on the left, which marks many body words like 脸 (liǎn) and 腿 (tuǐ). On the right is 却 (què), so picture a body part that carries you forward and back: your foot.
Common mistake: Learners often use 脚 for the whole leg, but the leg is 腿 (tuǐ) and 脚 is only the foot. Also avoid mixing it up with 角 (jiǎo, horn, corner), which has the same sound and tone.
