降落 is most often used for planes, parachutes, and other things that come down from the air in a controlled way. It can also describe a curtain or something lowering slowly. Example: 飞机马上就要降落了。(Fēijī mǎshàng jiù yào jiàngluò le.) The plane is about to land.
降 (jiàng) means to come down, and 落 (luò) means to fall, like a leaf dropping from a tree (落 has the grass radical 艹 on top). Put "come down" and "fall" together and you get a plane gently coming down to land.
Common mistake: 降 has two readings: jiàng (to descend) and xiáng (to surrender, as in 投降 tóuxiáng). In 降落 it is always fourth tone jiàng. Learners also sometimes use 降落 for prices or temperatures. For those, use 下降 (xiàjiàng) or 降低 (jiàngdī) instead.
