How to use 隔
隔 (gé) means something stands between two things, in space or time. It often takes a measure of distance or time, as in 隔一天 (every other day). Example: 他住在我隔壁。(Tā zhù zài wǒ gébì.) He lives next door to me.
The left side 阝 looks like a hill or mound, and the right side 鬲 (lì) is an old cooking pot. Picture a hill standing between you and the pot, so the hill separates you from it.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes confuse 隔 (gé) with 融 (róng, to melt), since both contain 鬲, but 隔 has 阝 on the left. Also, 隔 is second tone, so do not say it like 个 (gè).
