How to remember 尽

尽 is a ruler 尺 (chǐ) with two small drops ⺀ underneath. Picture measuring something out until only the last two drops are left and everything is used up.

In the fourth tone jìn, 尽 means to use up or to do something to the utmost, as in 尽力 (jìnlì) and 尽头 (jìntóu). In the third tone jǐn, it means as much as possible, as in 尽量 (jǐnliàng) and 尽快 (jǐnkuài). Example: 请尽快回复。(Qǐng jǐnkuài huífù.) Please reply as soon as possible.

Common mistake: Learners often say 尽量 and 尽快 with the fourth tone. In these words it is third tone jǐn, while 尽力 and 尽头 use fourth tone jìn. Also, do not confuse 尽 with 尺 (chǐ, ruler). 尽 has the two extra dots at the bottom.
