How 那 is built

Components of the character.

Radical: 阝 (place), shared by 160 characters on this site.

How to remember 那

那 (nà) has the ear-like component 阝 on the right side. Picture someone cupping an ear and pointing far off, asking about "that" thing over there.

那 (nà) points to something farther away, the opposite of 这 (zhè, this). It often comes before a measure word, as in 那个 (nàge), and it also starts sentences meaning "then" or "in that case." Example: 那本书很好。(Nà běn shū hěn hǎo.) That book is very good.

Common mistake: Learners often confuse 那 (nà, fourth tone, that) with 哪 (nǎ, third tone, which). 哪 has the extra mouth radical 口 on the left, and it is used for questions.
