一方面 is usually paired with 另一方面 (lìng yī fāngmiàn) or a second 一方面 to present two sides or two reasons. 我学中文，一方面是为了工作，一方面是因为喜欢。(Wǒ xué Zhōngwén, yī fāngmiàn shì wèile gōngzuò, yī fāngmiàn shì yīnwèi xǐhuan.) I study Chinese partly for work and partly because I like it.
一 (yī) means one, 方面 (fāngmiàn) means side or aspect. Picture holding up one finger and pointing to one side of a coin: "on the one hand."
Common mistake: Learners often use 一方面 alone and never give the second side. Chinese listeners expect a follow-up with 另一方面 or another 一方面. Also remember that 一 changes to second tone before fāng, so say yìfāngmiàn in speech even though it is written yīfāngmiàn.
