Meaning of 下车
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- to get off or out of (a bus, train, car etc)
How to use 下车
下车 is used for getting off any vehicle: buses, trains, taxis, cars, even bikes. It often appears with a place word to say where you get off. Example: 我在下一站下车。(Wǒ zài xià yí zhàn xiàchē.) I get off at the next stop.
下 (xià) means down and 车 (chē) means vehicle, so 下车 is literally going down from a vehicle. Picture stepping down out of a bus onto the street.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes say 出车 for getting out of a car because English uses "get out." Chinese uses 下车 for all vehicles, and 出车 means something else, such as a vehicle being sent out on a job. Also keep the tone on 下 as fourth tone (xià), not third.
