Meaning of 之类
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- and so on
- and such
How to use 之类
之类 goes after a list or a single example to show there are more things of the same type. It often appears as 之类的 before a noun. Example: 我喜欢苹果、香蕉之类的水果。(Wǒ xǐhuan píngguǒ, xiāngjiāo zhīlèi de shuǐguǒ.) I like fruit such as apples and bananas.
之 (zhī) works like an old-style "of", and 类 (lèi) means "kind" or "category", as in 人类 (rénlèi). So 之类 is "of that kind", a tag you add after examples to mean "and things like that".
Common mistake: Learners sometimes put 之类 before the examples, as in English "such as". In Chinese it always comes after them: 茶、咖啡之类, not 之类茶、咖啡. Also keep 类 in the fourth tone, lèi, not lěi.
