How to use 类似
类似 often comes before a noun with 的, or in the pattern 类似于 to mean similar to. It sounds a little more formal than 像 (xiàng). Example: 我以前也遇到过类似的问题。(Wǒ yǐqián yě yùdào guo lèisì de wèntí.) I have run into a similar problem before.
类 (lèi) means a kind or category, as in 种类 (zhǒnglèi), and 似 (sì) means to resemble, as in 相似 (xiāngsì). Things that look like they belong to the same kind are 类似.
Common mistake: Learners often read 似 as shì because of 似的 (shìde), but in 类似 it is always sì. Also, do not write 类似 alone right before a noun without 的. Say 类似的情况, not 类似情况 in careful speech.
