二维码 is everywhere in China: paying in shops, adding friends on WeChat, ordering food at restaurants, and checking in. The usual verb is 扫 (sǎo), to scan. Example: 请扫一下这个二维码。(Qǐng sǎo yíxià zhège èrwéimǎ.) Please scan this QR code.
Break it into parts: 二 (èr) two, 维 (wéi) dimension, 码 (mǎ) code. A QR code is a "two-dimension code", a square pattern you read across and down, unlike an old barcode that only runs one way.
Common mistake: Learners often say 二 as 两 (liǎng) here because 两 is used before measure words, but the word is fixed as 二维码, never 两维码. Also check the tone on 码: it is third tone mǎ, the same as in 号码 (hàomǎ), not first tone mā.
