How to use 密码
密码 is the everyday word for a password, a PIN, or a code to unlock something like a phone, bank card, or Wi-Fi network. It also covers cipher or secret code in a spy or cryptography sense. Example: 你的Wi-Fi密码是什么? (Nǐ de Wi-Fi mìmǎ shì shénme?) What is your Wi-Fi password?
密 (mì) means secret or dense, as in 秘密 (mìmì), and 码 (mǎ) means a code or number, as in 号码 (hàomǎ). Put them together and a 密码 is a secret number or code that only you know.
Common mistake: Learners often write 秘 (mì) instead of 密 because both appear in 秘密 and sound the same, but 密码 always uses 密 with the 宀 roof on top. Also keep 码 (mǎ) in the third tone, not the first-tone 妈 (mā) or the fourth-tone 骂 (mà).
