Definitions from CC-CEDICT.

jǐnmì
  1. inseparably close

How to use 紧密

紧密 describes close, solid connections between people, groups, ideas or parts, and often appears in formal or written Chinese. It commonly comes before 联系 (liánxì), 合作 (hézuò) or 结合 (jiéhé). Example: 两国关系很紧密。(Liǎng guó guānxì hěn jǐnmì.) The two countries have a very close relationship.

紧 (jǐn) means tight, as in 紧张 (jǐnzhāng) and 紧急 (jǐnjí). 密 (mì) means dense or close, as in 秘密 (mìmì). Something both tight and dense is 紧密: so close that nothing fits between.

Common mistake: Learners often write 秘 (mì) instead of 密 because of 秘密 (mìmì). 紧密 uses 密, the one with 宀 on top. Also, 紧密 is not used for physical distance. Do not say 我家离学校很紧密. Use 近 (jìn) for that.
