How to use 今年
今年 is a time word, so it usually goes before the verb, either at the start of the sentence or right after the subject. It works just like 今天 (jīntiān), 去年 (qùnián), and 明年 (míngnián). Example: 我今年二十岁。(Wǒ jīnnián èrshí suì.) I am twenty this year.
今 (jīn) means now or the present, as in 今天 (jīntiān) today, and 年 (nián) means year. Put them together and you get the year happening now: this year.
Common mistake: Many learners say 这年 (zhè nián) for this year by copying English, but the normal word is 今年. Another common error is putting 今年 at the end of the sentence, as in 我去中国今年. Say 我今年去中国 (Wǒ jīnnián qù Zhōngguó) instead.
