Meaning of 值
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- value
- (to be) worth
- to happen to
- to be on duty
How to use 值
On its own, 值 often means "to be worth" a price, and it appears in common words like 值得 (zhídé, worth it), 价值 (jiàzhí, value) and 值班 (zhíbān, to be on duty). Example: 这本书值五十块钱。(Zhè běn shū zhí wǔshí kuài qián.) This book is worth fifty yuan.
值 has the person radical 亻 on the left and 直 (zhí, straight) on the right, which also gives the sound. Picture a person standing up straight to show what they are worth.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 值 with 植 (zhí, to plant) and 置 (zhì, to place), since all three share 直. Remember that 值 has the person radical 亻, and 置 has a different tone, fourth instead of second.
