How to use 升值
升值 is used for currencies, property, assets, and sometimes skills or reputation that become worth more. Its opposite is 贬值 (biǎnzhí), to lose value. Example: 人民币升值了。(Rénmínbì shēngzhí le.) The renminbi has appreciated.
升 (shēng) means to rise, as in 上升 (shàngshēng), and 值 (zhí) means value, as in 价值 (jiàzhí). Put them together and the value rises.
Common mistake: Learners often say 价格升值 when they mean prices went up. For prices, use 涨价 (zhǎngjià) or 价格上涨. 升值 describes the item or currency gaining value, so say 房子升值了, not 房价升值了.
