Meaning of 共有
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- in total there are ...
- to own jointly
How to use 共有
共有 is most often used to give a total number, usually after the thing being counted and before the number. It can also mean to own something jointly, as in 共有财产 (gòngyǒu cáichǎn) jointly owned property. Example: 我们班共有三十个学生。(Wǒmen bān gòngyǒu sānshí ge xuésheng.) There are thirty students in our class in total.
共 (gòng) means together or in all, and 有 (yǒu) means to have. Put them together and you get "have in all," which is how you say the total count.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes write 一共有 and 共有 as if they were the same word every time. 一共 (yígòng) is the common spoken adverb. 共有 sounds a bit more formal or written, so in casual speech 一共有 is more natural. Also keep the fourth tone on 共 (gòng), not a first tone like 公 (gōng).
