Meaning of 到期
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- to fall due (loan etc)
- to expire (visa etc)
- to mature (investment bond etc)
How to use 到期
到期 is used for things with a fixed deadline, such as visas, contracts, loans, bonds, memberships and food. It often follows the thing that expires, and 快 (kuài) or 已经 (yǐjīng) can come before it. Example: 我的签证下个月到期。(Wǒ de qiānzhèng xià ge yuè dàoqī.) My visa expires next month.
到 (dào) means to arrive and 期 (qī) means a set period or date. When the period arrives at its end, something has 到期: the date has come.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes say 过期 (guòqī) when they mean 到期. 到期 means the deadline is reached, while 过期 means it has already passed and the item is no longer valid, as with expired milk. Also keep 期 in the first tone (qī). Do not read it like 起 (qǐ).
