Meaning of 办事
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- to handle (affairs)
- to work
How to use 办事
办事 means getting tasks or errands done, often at an office, bank, or government counter. It also describes how someone works, as in 办事认真 (careful at getting things done). Example: 我下午要去银行办事。(Wǒ xiàwǔ yào qù yínháng bànshì.) I have to go to the bank this afternoon to take care of some business.
办事 is just 办 (bàn, to handle) plus 事 (shì, matter). You 办 the 事: you take care of the thing that needs doing.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes add an object after 办事, as in 办事护照. That is wrong because 事 is already the object. Say 办护照 (bàn hùzhào) instead. Also keep 办 in the fourth tone, bàn, not bān as in 班 (class).
