How to use 去

去 (qù) is the everyday verb for going somewhere, and the place comes right after it with no preposition. It also attaches to verbs to show movement away from the speaker, as in 出去 (chūqù) and 回去 (huíqù). Example: 我明天去北京。(Wǒ míngtiān qù Běijīng.) I am going to Beijing tomorrow.

Picture 去 (qù) as a person standing on the ground (土 on top) with a little bag (厶) at their feet, ready to leave. Grab your bag and go.

Common mistake: Learners often add 到 or 在 and say 我去到学校 when 我去学校 (wǒ qù xuéxiào) is enough. Also, 去年 (qùnián) means last year, not next year, which many beginners mix up because 去 means to go.
