Meaning of 上去
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- to go up
How to use 上去
上去 is used on its own or after a verb to show upward movement away from the speaker, as in 走上去 (walk up) or 爬上去 (climb up). It also appears with abstract meanings like adding something onto a surface. Example: 你先上去,我马上来。(Nǐ xiān shàngqù, wǒ mǎshàng lái.) You go up first, I will come right away.
上 (shàng) means up and 去 (qù) means go away from the speaker, so 上去 is going up and away from where you are. Picture yourself at the bottom of the stairs watching a friend climb up and away.
Common mistake: Learners often mix up 上去 and 上来 (shànglái). Use 上去 when the movement is away from you, and 上来 when someone comes up toward you, so if you are upstairs calling a friend, say 上来 not 上去.
