晚上 meaning in English

晚上 covers the evening and night, roughly from sunset until you go to bed. It often comes before the verb to say when something happens, with no word for "in" needed. Example: 我晚上看书。(Wǒ wǎnshang kàn shū.) I read in the evening.

晚 (wǎn) has the sun radical 日 on the left, so think of the sun going late, and 上 (shang) marks a time of day, just like in 早上 (zǎoshang). Put them together and you get the late part of the day: evening.

Common mistake: Learners often put 晚上 at the end of the sentence like English, as in 我看书晚上. In Chinese the time word goes before the verb: 我晚上看书. Also note that 上 here is usually read in the neutral tone, shang, not shàng.
