How to use 国际
国际 often comes before a noun with no 的 needed, as in 国际新闻 (guójì xīnwén, international news) or 国际学校 (guójì xuéxiào, international school). Example: 他在一家国际公司工作。(Tā zài yì jiā guójì gōngsī gōngzuò.) He works at an international company.
国 (guó) means country, and 际 (jì) means a border or the space between things, as in 实际 (shíjì). So 国际 is what happens between countries: international.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes use 国际 to mean foreign or abroad, as in 我想去国际. That is wrong. Use 国外 (guówài) for abroad and 外国 (wàiguó) for foreign countries. Also keep 际 (jì) in the fourth tone and do not confuse it with 级 (jí).
