How to use 士兵
士兵 is a neutral, slightly formal word for an ordinary soldier, common in news, history and stories. In everyday speech people often say 当兵 (dāng bīng) for joining the army. Example: 这些士兵在边境站岗。(Zhèxiē shìbīng zài biānjìng zhàn gǎng.) These soldiers stand guard at the border.
士 (shì) is a person of some standing, and 兵 (bīng) shows two hands at the bottom holding up a weapon. Put them together and you get a person who carries weapons: a soldier.
Common mistake: Learners often write 士 (shì) as 土 (tǔ, earth). In 士 the top horizontal stroke is longer, and in 土 the bottom stroke is longer. Also keep the fourth tone on shì and the first tone on bīng. Do not say shíbīng.
