How to use 学时
学时 is a formal word used by schools, universities, and training programs to count teaching hours in a course. It often appears with numbers and the word 课程 (kèchéng, course). Example: 这门课一共有三十二个学时。(Zhè mén kè yígòng yǒu sānshí'èr gè xuéshí.) This course has 32 class hours in total.
学时 combines 学 (xué, to study) and 时 (shí, time), so it is simply study time counted in units. Think of 小时 (xiǎoshí, hour) but for classes: one 学时 is one class hour on the school timetable.
Common mistake: Learners often treat 学时 as the same as 小时 (xiǎoshí), but a 学时 is a teaching period that is usually 45 or 50 minutes, not a full 60-minute hour. Also do not use 学时 for everyday time like "when I was a student". For that, say 上学的时候 (shàngxué de shíhou).
