How to use 并
In everyday speech 并 is most common before a negative word to stress that something is really not so, as in 并不 or 并没有. It also links two actions as "and also" in more formal writing, and appears in words like 合并 (hébìng, to merge). Example: 他并不知道。(Tā bìng bù zhīdào.) He doesn't know at all.
Picture 并 as two people standing shoulder to shoulder, joined by the two horizontal strokes across the middle. Side by side and joined together is the core idea of 并 (bìng): to combine, and also to do things together.
Common mistake: Learners often use 并 to join two nouns like "you and me," but that needs 和 (hé). 并 and 并且 link verbs or clauses, not simple nouns. Also do not drop the negative: 并 alone does not mean "not at all," it only strengthens 不 or 没.
