旁 (páng) rarely stands alone in speech. It usually appears in words like 旁边 (pángbiān, beside) and 一旁 (yīpáng, aside). It can also mean other, as in 旁人 (pángrén, other people). Example: 我家旁边有一个超市。(Wǒ jiā pángbiān yǒu yī gè chāoshì.) There is a supermarket next to my home.
Look at the bottom of 旁 (páng): it contains 方 (fāng), which can mean side or direction. The top part spreads out like a roof stretching off to the sides, so think of 旁 as the space off to one side.
Common mistake: Learners often write the bottom as 万 (wàn) or 力 (lì) instead of 方 (fāng). Check for the dot on top of the bottom part. Another slip is saying pàng, which is 胖 (pàng, fat), instead of the second tone páng.
