How to use 移
移 is mostly used inside compounds such as 移动 (yídòng, to move), 转移 (zhuǎnyí, to transfer) and 移民 (yímín, to immigrate). On its own it often appears in set phrases or written style, like 移开 (yíkāi, to move away). Example: 请把桌子移到窗边。(Qǐng bǎ zhuōzi yí dào chuāng biān.) Please move the table to the window.
移 (yí) has 禾 (grain plant) on the left and 多 (many) on the right. Picture a farmer moving many rice seedlings to a new field, which is the idea of shifting something from one place to another.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes write the left side as 木 (tree) instead of 禾. 禾 has an extra slanted stroke on top. Also keep the second tone in yí, and do not confuse it with 已 (yǐ, already) or 一 (yī).
