How to use 组
组 often means a small group or team, as in 小组 (xiǎozǔ) and 组长 (zǔzhǎng), and it also works as a verb meaning to form or put together. It is a measure word for sets of things or groups of people too. Example: 我们分成三个组。(Wǒmen fēnchéng sān gè zǔ.) We split into three groups.
组 is made of the silk radical 纟 on the left and 且 (qiě) on the right, which gives the sound. Picture silk threads 纟 being tied together into one bundle, the way people are joined into a group.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 组 (zǔ) with 租 (zū, to rent), which has the grain radical 禾 and a first tone. Remember that the silk radical 纟 means joining, and 组 takes the third tone.
