解 (jiě) rarely stands alone in everyday speech. It mostly appears in compounds about separating, untying, or solving, such as 解决 (jiějué), 解开 (jiěkāi), and 理解 (lǐjiě). Example: 这个问题很难解决。(Zhège wèntí hěn nán jiějué.) This problem is hard to solve.

解 is made of 角 (jiǎo, horn), 刀 (dāo, knife), and 牛 (niú, ox). Picture a knife cutting the horn off an ox, which is a way to remember the idea of taking something apart.

Common mistake: Learners often write 刀 on the top right as 力 or 夕, or put 牛 on the left. The left side is 角 and the right side is 刀 above 牛. Also remember that 解 has other readings, jiè and xiè, so do not read the surname 解 as jiě.
