陆地 is used when contrasting land with sea or water, often in geography, travel, and nature topics. It is a bit formal and usually not used for the ground under your feet. Example: 地球上大部分是海洋，陆地比较少。(Dìqiú shang dà bùfen shì hǎiyáng, lùdì bǐjiào shǎo.) Most of the earth is ocean, and there is relatively little land.
