How 且 is built
Pictographic character. A stone altar.
Radical: 一 (one), shared by 34 characters on this site.
How to remember 且
且 is a picture of a stone altar: a tall stacked shape (drawn here like 月) sitting on a flat base line 一. Picture offerings piled up layer on layer, and you get the idea of adding more: "and also, moreover."
Today 且 rarely stands alone. It mostly appears in words like 而且 (érqiě) and 并且 (bìngqiě) to add a further point, or 暂且 (zànqiě) for "for the time being." Example: 这家店便宜,而且很好吃。(Zhè jiā diàn piányi, érqiě hěn hǎochī.) This place is cheap, and the food is good too.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 且 with 目 (mù, eye) or 旦 (dàn, dawn). 且 has two inner strokes and a bottom line wider than the box, while 目 is a closed box and 旦 has 日 sitting above a separate line. Also keep the third tone: qiě, not qiē.
