How to remember 田
田 (tián) is a picture of a rice paddy seen from above: a square plot divided by paths into four smaller fields. Picture walking the raised paths between the plots.
田 rarely stands alone in modern speech and usually appears in words like 农田 (nóngtián, farmland), 稻田 (dàotián, rice paddy), and 种田 (zhòngtián, to farm). It also extends to other productive land, as in 油田 (yóutián, oil field). Example: 他爷爷在老家种田。(Tā yéye zài lǎojiā zhòngtián.) His grandfather farms back in his hometown.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 田 (tián) with 由 (yóu, from) and 甲 (jiǎ, first), which look the same except for a stroke poking out the top or bottom. Also keep the second tone, since tiǎn or tiàn would be a different word.
