How to use 例如

例如 is used to introduce one or more examples after a general statement. It is a bit more formal than 比如 (bǐrú) and is common in writing, textbooks and presentations. Example: 我喜欢水果，例如苹果和香蕉。(Wǒ xǐhuan shuǐguǒ, lìrú píngguǒ hé xiāngjiāo.) I like fruit, for example apples and bananas.

例 (lì) is the 例 in 例子 (lìzi), an example, and 如 (rú) means like or as. Put them together and you get "examples like these", which is for example.

Common mistake: Learners often confuse 例 (lì) with 列 (liè, to line up). 例 has the person radical 亻 on the left, and its tone is fourth tone lì, not liè. Another trap is writing 例如说. The natural spoken phrase is 比如说 (bǐrú shuō), not 例如说.
