Meaning of 全部
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- whole; all
How to use 全部
全部 can come before a noun, often with 的, or before a verb to mean everyone or everything did it. It is common in everyday speech and writing. Example: 作业我全部做完了。(Zuòyè wǒ quánbù zuò wán le.) I finished all of my homework.
全 (quán) means complete, and 部 (bù) means a part or section, as in 部分 (bùfen). Put them together and every part is complete, so 全部 means the whole thing, all of it.
Common mistake: Learners often put 全部 after the verb in English word order, as in 我做完全部 for all of it. The natural pattern moves the object to the front and puts 全部 before the verb: 我全部做完了. Also do not mix it up with 完全 (wánquán), which means totally or completely and describes degree, as in 完全不懂 (completely don't understand), not quantity.
