How to use 划
Read it huá for rowing, scratching, or being worth it, as in 划船 (huáchuán) and 划算 (huásuàn). Read it huà for planning or dividing, as in 计划 (jìhuà) and 划分 (huàfēn). Example: 这个价格很划算。(Zhège jiàgé hěn huásuàn.) This price is a really good deal.
The left side 戈 (gē) is an old weapon and the right side 刂 is a knife, so two blades together make you think of cutting or scratching a line. Picture an oar slicing through water and you also get the rowing sense, huá.
Common mistake: Learners often say jìhuá for 计划. The correct reading is jìhuà, with a fourth tone, because planning uses the huà reading. Also do not confuse 划 with 刬 (chǎn) or 戈 alone; 划 has the knife radical 刂 on the right.
