How to use 区域
区域 is a fairly formal word for an area or zone, used in news, planning, maps, and signs. It often follows a describing word, as in 禁烟区域 (jìnyān qūyù, no-smoking area). Example: 这个区域不能停车。(Zhège qūyù bù néng tíngchē.) You cannot park in this area.
区 (qū) shows a box that is open on one side with something marked off inside, like a piece of land set apart. 域 (yù) has the earth radical 土 on the left, so together 区域 is a marked-off piece of land: an area or region.
Common mistake: Learners often write 域 (yù) as 城 (chéng, city) because both have 土 on the left, but the right side of 域 is 或 (huò), not 成 (chéng). Also keep the first tone on 区 (qū) and do not drop the fourth tone on 域 (yù).
